My old code is nasty... but still worth keeping.

Don't rewrite it, refactor it. It's very important to assume that any ugly code is ugly for a reason, figure out what the reason is. Sometimes it's because the coder had thought there wasn't enough time to do it right, sometimes its because the code has nasty looking bug fixes in it, sometimes its because the coder actually wanted it to look bad.

the important lesson to learn from this is that it's never too late to use all of the old stuff. Find out what was good about it and drag it in.
